gillian lockwoodDr Gillian Lockwood is medical director of Midland Fertility Services in the West Midlands, an independent clinic providing more than 900  IVF and ICSI cycles a year to both NHS and private patients.
She has a special interest in age-related infertility and is an advocate of ‘social egg freezing’ to give older women the chance of genetic motherhood.                                                                                     
Midland Fertility Services was the first UK fertility clinic to achieve live births from the mothers’ own eggs, following egg freezing and the subsequent thaw, fertilisation and transfer, after the birth of four babies since May 2002.  Gillian has published widely on all aspects of fertility, and lectures and  broadcasts on ethical and social issues in reproductive medicine.  She  has given expert advice on TV and radio programmes including ‘A Child  Against All Odds’ (BBC1), ‘The Baby Race’ (C4), Jeremy Vine (BBC R2), ‘Heaven & Earth’ (BBC1) and ‘Woman’s Hour’ (BBC R4).  She has also advised on scripts for ‘Holby City’ and ‘The Archers.

Gillian was a late recruit to medicine having originally read Philosophy, Politics and Economics and then worked at the Cabinet Office as a government statistician.  She qualified in medicine from Oxford in 1986 and subsequently trained in reproductive medicine and IVF.She is the vice-chair of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Ethics Committee and is a spokesperson on ethics for the British Fertility Society.  In 2004 she became a special advisor to the government Select Committee on Science and Technology which undertook a review of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act.
